PRESS RELEASE:
NDC President Adrian Washington Named to lead Anacostia Waterfront Corporation
Monday, November 14th, 2005

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA-The Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) today named Adrian G. Washington, a native of Anacostia and a longtime community developer, as its new President and CEO. Mr. Washington is currently president of the Neighborhood Development Company (NDC).

Mr. Washington, 46, founded NDC in 1998 and has since developed more than 200,000 square feet of real estate in the District’s neighborhoods.

“I am excited about the opportunity to play a role in the revitalization and restoration of the Anacostia River and its surrounding neighborhoods that have been neglected for far too long,’’ Mr. Washington said. “This is an amazing opportunity to truly transform this river while creating economic opportunities for residents throughout the project area. I look forward to further developing the many partnerships that will be necessary to make this project a success.”

Stephen Goldsmith, Chairman of the AWC’s board of directors, said Mr. Washington is an excellent choice to lead the corporation.

“Adrian has a long history of working to revitalize the city’s neighborhoods,’’ Mr. Goldsmith said. “He is deeply committed to that cause, and will be an enthusiastic leader for the corporation. He is the perfect choice for the job.’’

A graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Business School, Mr. Washington has also served as Vice President and General Manager of the National Housing Partnership, as Senior Associate at Mercer Management Consultants, and as President and CEO of A.G. Washington Associates. He has served as Chairman of the Board of the Capital City Public Charter School, President of the African American Real Estate Professionals of DC and Co-Chair of the Mayor’s Comprehensive Housing Strategy Task Force.

“I grew up in Anacostia, and have lived in the District most of my life,’’ Mr. Washington said. “I have a real connection to the neighborhoods, and the people who are depending on the AWC to restore the river and surrounding neighborhoods. This development is a great opportunity for them, and we will not let them down.’’

The AWC is overseeing implementation of the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, a 25-year plan to clean and restore the Anacostia River and redevelop land adjacent to the River that has been barren or underutilized. The plan also calls for revitalizing nearby neighborhoods.

Already, more than $2 billion in public and private investment has been committed to waterfront-related projects, including the construction of a new ballpark for the Washington Nationals. Over the next five years, the AWC will coordinate a public investment strategy which will facilitate the construction of more than 3 million square feet of new office space, more than 4,500 units of new housing, 32 acres of new public parkland, and a 20-mile riverwalk along both sides of the river. These new uses are expected to generate up to $1.5 billion in new tax revenues over the next 20 years, in addition to more than $4 billion in private investment.

“The Corporation is fortunate to have Mr. Washington, who grew up in these neighborhoods, to lead these projects,” said Eric Price, AWC Board Member. “His knowledge of the community and his vast experience as a manager and a developer will be a major asset as we move forward. The Board of Directors could not be more enthusiastic about this selection and are eager for Mr. Washington to begin work.’’
